Story of Ms. Marie
Ms. Marie (77) asked the Intervention Centre for help. She told the workers in the Centre that her son (53) is using and abusing her. The son has already been for a longer period of time living in his mother’s flat, basically since he got divorced. He was also unemployed and abusing alcohol.
At first, Ms. Marie pitied her son and wanted to help him, since she believed he could stand up on his own feet soon again. But this did not happen. The drinking abuse grew worse, he started drinking daily and he was refusing treatment. He wasn’t giving his mother any money to help her with running the household and she paid everything out of the pension she drew. The son was used to ask her for money to buy alcoholic drinks and when she refused, he was scolding her, humiliating her and even started abusing her physically later on. He was also getting more and more indebted, but he was not paying his obligations back, and Ms. Marie started being afraid of possible execution. She repeatedly asked her son to move out of her flat, but he only laughed at her. Ms. Marie started feeling desperate and she did not know what to do. Since her son’s abuses had been constantly getting worse, she started being afraid of her health as well as of life. She asked the Czech Police to help her and the Police ordered her son to leave her flat for 10 days. Subsequently, Ms. Marie decided to appeal to the court to deal with her situation. In cooperation with the Intervention Centre, the period of her son’s banishment from their flat got extended to the period of one year, and he got moved out of the flat by court’s decision. In effect, his permanent residency was discontinued and thus Ms. Marie did not have to worry any longer about the execution and could peacefully enjoy the afternoon of her life.
